We recently heard of the death of Alan Sunderland from his second
cousin John Maynard, when he found a contact whilst going through
Alan's papers. My husband and I met with Alan in August 2006 for
the first time. Alan thought he was the last of the Sunderlands.
Alan was grandson to Robert Sunderland and Harriett Rowley of Sunderlands
Yard. John Maynard is their great grandson. My husband Richard Sunderland
is also their great grandson, so the 'Sunderland' family name direct
link to South Milford still lives on.
With regards
Mr & Mrs Richard Sunderland

Nell Westerman is Aunt to our Mother, who used to be Irene Simmonds
(Nell was Nell Simmonds before she was married)
We are interested in any old photos of the family. I understand
their son LLoyd, ran the pub for a time, and we are keen to know
if any of the family are still around. When Nell and Walter retired,
they lived in Legion Road, South Milford.
If you are able to provide us with any information we would be grateful.

William Lee my great great grandfather was born in South Milford
around 1819. I believe his father was John Lee. If anyone can help
me that will be brilliant as the name is such a common one and William
Lee moved around so that searching through records generally throws
up far too many red herrings.

My name is Julie and I am currently researching my family tree.
My great grandfather was called Walter Atkinson, his dob 17th Aug
1877. I know he was born in Durham and married Ann Herron Edgar
on 3rd March 1903.
I also know he died in active service in the 1st world war. Unfortunately
I know little else, for example his date of death. I was wondering
if the Walter Atkinson mentioned on your web site could be the same
one and if you could give me any further information.
Many thanks for your time.
Julie.

I am trying to find any information on the Relton family who lived
in the South Milford area between 1890 and 1910 approx.
My great, great grandfather William Relton is shown to have farmed
a 16 acre area near the village around this time after moving from
Exelby/Bedale area. He was married to Jane Trenham and they had
four children Alfred, George (my great grandfather), Mary Ellen
and David.
The 1901 Census shows the family (William aged 66) living at "Milford
Common", although I cannot locate this area searching the internet.
If anyone has any information on either the Relton or Trenham families
I would be very grateful to hear from them.

Elizabeth[nee Armitage] all residing at Castleford.
Ann Crossland had a brother Thomas Crossland a farmer of South Milford.

My great grandfather, William Gibson, was born in South Milford
in 1855. At about the age of 23 (1878) he and his sister migrated
to New Zealand where he bought land, cleared the bush and set up
a farm. He had four children, William, Evelyn, Thomas and Anne.
I am trying to trace other Gibson descendants as I believe that
William had brothers who may have moved to Scotland. I have letters
written in 1907 from men who were on the boat with him from England.
They had settled in Australia and were writing to see how he had
made out in New Zealand some 29 years after they arrived in Australia.
I have photos of headstones from a church yard in South Milford
bearing various Gibson names and also have a photo of a street in
South Milford called Gibson Close. I note from the website that
under the 1822 Business directory there is a William Gibson listed
as a farmer. This is quite possibly my great great grandfather.
If you are able to put me in touch with anyone who knows the family
history or has access to some of the old records I would be most
grateful. I live in New Zealand and intend to travel to South Milford
in June 2007 and spend some time there, so any guidance would be
most helpful.

I am presently researching my family history and have discovered
that many of my relatives were born and lived within the South Milford,
Sherburn in Elmet, Saxton in Elmet and Barwick in Elmet region.
Many of them worked on the railways around the mid to late 1800s.
I have traced back to a Richard Atkinson, born c1636, who was born
in Barwick in Elmet. I would welcome any information. Many thanks.

My branch of the Pickering Family lived in Brotherton untill the
late 1800 where they moved to Castleford, I assume because of the
mining industry. I have traced the Brotherton Pickerings back as
far as 1747, from here things become a little vague, in the early/
mid 1800's Pickering's were very prevalent in the Pontfract and
South Milford as well Sherburn in Elmet and BrothertonI
It is easy to assume that there is a connection between these families
somewhere in the distant past, Brotherton, South Milford, Sherburn
in Elmet, and Pontefract are pretty close even for the horse and
cart days. If any one is re-searching the Pickerings, or are related
in someway in the past, I would be interested to hear from you.
Another site that could be of interest to researchers is www.Brotherton.org.uk
this is a free site put together by Brian Townsley and family, he
has put a lot of work into it and its free... good hunting...

Hello, I wonder if anyone can help? I am tracing my family history
and trying to find out more about my maternal Great-Grandmother,
Mary Ann Ellen Batman, who was born in South Milford in 1860. Her
father was William Batman and she gives his occupation as 'Farmer'
on her marriage certificate ( Leeds, 1883 to Frederick Dalby of
Brafferton ). I note quite a few 'Batman' names in the South Milford
graveyard transcription and wonder if any of them might belong to
my family.
Mary Ann Ellen had a brother called Richard Battman ( note difference
in flexible spelling! ) also born in South Milford in 1858 but living
with/visiting his sister and her family in Leeds at the time of
the 1901 census. I would especially like to hear from anyone who
can tell me anything about William Batman as without this info.
I can't progress backwards, as it were! Many thanks, Brenda Scott

Like alot of people I am trying to trace back my family tree and
am trying to find out any information about the Herbert William
Wilson born in S Milford who was in the Northumberland Fusiliers
married Mary Howie born in 1886 in Troon, Scotland. Think they moved/lived
their married life in Hambleton. Herbert's mother was Annie Mary
(not sure if she was born in S Milford) but certainly lived on the
Main Street all her life. I don't know who she married. I have searched
the internet records and can find absolutely nothing relating to
them, guess they didn't bother with census records. Is there anyone
out there that can help before I start the old feet walking cemetries
and libraries etc. Any infomation or even old photographs? would
be welcome. Many thanks. Sandra Hirst(nee Howcroft) of Hambleton.

I have in my possession a fob watch (not valuable)
engraved with the inscription
Presented to Lieutenant E W Archer
By the parishioners of SOUTH MILFORD
IN HONOUR OF HIS WINNING THE MILITARY CROSS
28.8.19
Would this watch be of real interest to any relatives? I notice
that Sec-Lieut Ernest W Archer -----Durham Light Infantry is listed
on your rememberance[sic] web page but he is not shown as having
a military distinction. Perhaps the inscription on the watch could
be verified and E W Archer given the credit for his achievements
on your remembrance page.
I have no known family connections to this man, nor do I have any
connections with South Milford. I am not looking for money for the
watch; I am more interested in contacting a descendant of E W Archer
who would find the watch to be significant. The watch has been in
the family for a long time and I do not know anything about it or
how it was acquired. Marcus Milburn, - Location: Hatfield, Herts

I'm searching for any details of Hannah Maskill, born in South
Milford
between 1849 and 1851. She was married on 18/09/1870 to James Skelton,
the marriage certificate giving her father as Thomas Maskill. Sometime
before 1882, James may have died (he was a miner), as Hannah re-married,
to Henry Vincent Bedmore, 31/08/1882. Hannah appears in the 1871
and 1881 censuses (censi?), but no birth registration can be found.
So, any new details would be welcome.

family started life out as CLAYBROUGH, changing the name to CLAYBURN

I have been researching my husband's family history, and found
that much of his family come from the South Milford/Monk Fryston
areas. We visited South Milford at Easter this year, and had a good
look round the graveyard. We found burials for a few of his relatives,
in particular, Beachel Pickup, with wife Emma, John & Mary Pickup,
Sarah Pickup. We would be most interested to hear from anybody descended
from these people, or any others not mentioned. I have to say that
we were highly impresssed with the church and it's grounds, and
hope to visit the area again next year.

I am trying to find the Date and Birthplace of my grandfather
JOHN EDWIN PAINTER. (I think he was born around 1879-1880)
My grandmother was SARAH ANN (nee TERRY) Sarah Ann was the daughter
of Richard Terry and Jane (nee Bedford). and she was born in South
Milford (Milford Junction) on 14/06/1876. (Sarah Ann had been previously
married in 1894 to GEORGE WILSON CHAPMAN) In the 1901 census Sarah
and George were still married.
As my dad Leonard Morris Painter was born in 1906, I am guessing
that Sarah and John Edwin Painter will have married before 1906.
There is a John E. Painter (birthplace NORMANTON) on the 1901 census
(lodging in South Milford) with the same job, "A Railway wagon
examiner" as what is written on my dads birth certificate for
his fathers job. However I can't find anything before or since 1901
about John Edwin Painter. (This may or may not have been my grandfather
in the 1901 census). It could have been a coincidence that someone
of the same name was lodging in the area. I would be really grateful
if anyone could throw any light onto the mystery of JOHN EDWIN PAINTER.
Just an update on the John Edwin Painter and Sarah Ann (nee. Terry)
****************************************
I have, since my last posting, found my grandfathers birth certificate.
He was born in Woodhouse, Normanton in 1878 to a MARY ANN PAINTER
(nee. MORRIS) but unfortunately no father on the birth certificate
(fathers name is just a blank) So if the name MORRIS, in this area
means anything to anyone please get in touch.
I have also found John Edwin and Sarah Ann marriage certificate
for the date 1915.

I am researching my family tree and trying to find
details of my Great grandfather, William Middleton. According
to the 1901 Census he was born in South Milford in 1855 +/- a year.
His father, Thomas, was a farmer according to William's marriage
certificate. William married Louisa Mary Reynolds in Sherburn
Parish Church in 1885 by which time William was also a farmer,
living in Askham Richard. His two eldest sons on the census
Fred and Harry were born in Sherburn in 1885 and 1888 respectively.
I have so far been unable to find William on the birth index.
Can anyone tell me anything about the family or which register office
would hold his birth certificate? I have been unable to find
William or Thomas on the 1881 Census.

information about him, his descendants or his work will be of interest.

I am currently researching my family history and have been drawn
to South Milford by my ggrandfather John Edward Gill. He was certainly
living in South Milford in 1883 when he married Sarah Anne Letby

parishoners had any information regarding these people or if there
are any descendants still living in the area who may be able to
assist?
